For this leisure project, conducted over a weekend, I designed an icecream app for the fictional company 'Scoop'. The purpose of the project was to develop my Figma skills. Further the purpose was to design and app which gave customers the possibility to order their icecream in advance of picking it up, thus avoiding lines and lines of people.
The idea for the project arose due to the distancing restrictions brought upon us by corona. Further I also wanted the customers to have the same experience that they have when going to their local icecream place, with an option to create their own icecream combinations, instead of just being presented with premade icecreams.
As the focal point of the app, is to give user the option to match their own icecream flavours, the homepage is designed with this in mind.
The first thing that users are met with, is a banner, that gives them the option to create their own icecream. Once users click on the banner, they are lead to the page, wherefrom they can mix and match their favorite flavour combinations.
From the homepage, users also have the option to filter icecreams based on different variants, such as 'Milk based', 'Sorbet' or 'Diairy free' icecreams. For those who want premade flavour combinations, there is an option to chose icecreams combos from the 'Favorites' section at the bottom.
Once users click on the banner on the frontpage, they land on the page wherefrom they can 'design' their own personal icecream.
Users can choose between different cones, flavours and toppings, which options become visible once the users drag the 'swipe-up' menu into screen view. From here they can toggle between 'cones', flavours' and 'toppings'.
Users have the opportunity to read about the individual icecream flavours, by clicking on the flavours from the swipe-up menu. This view could possibly be developed further by adding additional details, such as an overview of ingredients, to compensate for the once who suffers from various allergies.
I researched different food apps, and specifically icecream/dessert apps to get a better understanding of what to include in my solution.
At the same time I noticed that most icecream apps offer their users premade icecreams, but do not give users the option to combine their own flavours. I therefor decided to focus on creating an app which would allow users to mix and match their own icecream flavours to create the perfect scoop.
The next step was to sketch out as many ideas as I could. Quantity over quality, as Bill Buxton so neatly put it. At this point the purpose was to explore several different ideas. I made a phone template from a piece of paper and started sketching out ideas.
I did not want to jump directly into developing or designing as you run the risk of getting too attached to your design, as you have invested time and effort into the process at that point. A sketch should be quick and dirty!
